My top genres are:
- Horror
- Thrillers
- Young Adult
- Nonfiction (especially paranormal, rock and roll history, memoirs, and trivia)
- Graphic Novels
- Humor
- Classics
I like Kurt Vonnegut and Stephen King. I can be intimidated by large books. The last large book I read was probably 11/22/63 by Stephen King. I enjoy short stories because I can read them in smaller chunks.
A book has to hold my attention and make me want to know what’s going to happen. It is hard for me to continue reading a book once it hits a lull in the story. I like to be surprised.
I read some sci-fi, but I don’t like when it gets really technical. I am all about the story; I don’t need to know how the spaceship flies.
I don’t always read what’s popular, but I read book reviews and look at best sellers’ lists to determine if there is anything I should be aware of. This is one reason my list of books keeps growing.
There are a few genres that I avoid. I am not a fan of romance. I’m okay with books that have a love story included (I really enjoyed Eleanor & Park), but I want my love stories to have more than just romance. The story has to be good.
Amish and Christian fiction are really popular at my library, but I don’t really get it. I’ve always been a bit warped, so nice, happy books usually don’t do much for me. I will admit, I haven’t given it a chance.
I am not a fan of vampires. I prefer zombies.
Hi Andrea, I couldn't help but laugh when you wrote, "I’ve always been a bit warped, so nice, happy books usually don’t do much for me," because I could say the very same about myself :) A coworker has called my reading tastes "bleak," and I am totally OK with that.

I'm glad to know I am not the only one! :)
DeleteIf you're going to read romance for one of your annotations for class (or just in general to try it out), I would suggest trying the Maiden Lane series by Elizabeth Hoyt (first book is "Wicked Intentions," but my favorites are "Thief of Shadows" and "Darling Beast"). They have thicker plots than a lot of romances. I know some people who don't like romance who really enjoy those books. Also, she doesn't use very flowery language when writing about sex, so if you get distracted by the purple prose that some romance writers use in those scenes this is a nice difference; it throws off traditional romance readers sometimes, though.
ReplyDeleteI will keep that series in mind. Thanks for the suggestion!
DeleteAmish fiction is really popular at my library too! I don't get it. For awhile I was either being asked for amish fiction or vampire/zombie/sci-fi books. I figure the author that writes Amish Vampires in Space will probably be a very rich person...

ReplyDeleteBoth Amish/Christian fiction and erotica are super popular at my library. I know of a few people who read both genres, which I think is funny because they are such extreme opposites!
DeleteThis is the third time I have tried to reply. Hopefully I can make it stick. Maybe if I read more SciFi I would understand technology more. . . I love Christian Fiction author Tracie Peterson. I have such a crazy busy life, I find that it calms and inspires much like a Hallmark special. I really enjoy YA reads also. I went through a dystopian phase, a paranormal phase, and a reality based phase. I also enjoy some of the fairytale retellings.
